How To Choose The Best Percolator

Before you pick your new percolator, you will want to get an idea of the features you should look for. Thankfully, percolators are fairly straightforward appliances, but you should still make sure to check the following characteristics out before making a purchase.

Capacity: How Much Coffee Do You Want?

Via Amazon.com

Depending on how much coffee you drink each day or how many coffee drinkers there are in your house, you might need a lot of coffee or just a little bit.

Percolators come in different size capacities, and you’ll want to choose one that makes enough cups for your needs and no extra. There’s nothing worse than wasting coffee or needing to microwave it the next day!

Check out the capacity rating on each of the percolators that you are considering. Usually, these are listed in “cups.” Remember a cup is often defined as 6 ounces, so you might need to get a larger cup capacity than you think.

Plug It In Or Heat It Up?

Via Amazon.com

There are two different types of percolators that are most popular.

  • Electric percolators have an electrical cord and are plugged into the wall to be used.
  • Stovetop percolators are placed over a heat source such as a burner to be warmed up until the coffee and be prepared.

While many of the percolators I’m going to cover today are electric percolators, my favorite is a stovetop percolator! Some people believe that stovetop percolators can be much more complicated to use successfully, but it’s just as easy as using an electric percolator. The only difference is the heat source.

Both types of percolators are okay; it’s all up to personal preference. When used properly, similar results can be achieved with both types.

Durability

Via Amazon.com

No matter what kind of kitchen appliance you are purchasing, durability is always a very important factor. Simply put, you don’t want to invest your money in a product that is going to fail a few weeks down the road, so making sure to purchase products made with reliable parts is important.

For a percolator, you will want to make sure that it is made of stainless steel or another high-quality material that will stand up to boiling water and coffee over and over again. Percolators made out of low-quality material can start to rust, degrade, or even make your coffee taste like metal. Yuck!

You will also want to make sure that the handle, electric cord, and lid of the percolator are attached well. You don’t want to have to reattach any of these parts if they come loose.

Additionally, if the percolator comes with a warranty, even better! A warranty gives you the peace of mind that you will be able to get help from the company should you encounter any faulty parts.

Why Use A Percolator?

I love using a percolator to make coffee for a few major reasons:

The Coffee Tastes Better

This is just a matter of opinion, but I’ve found that coffee made with a percolator tastes better than other methods of coffee brewing that i have tried at home.

The flavor is typically more rich and robust than with an electric coffee maker, and it comes out very consistently every time.

It’s Easy To Serve

Percolators are particularly great for when you have guests over. Since the percolator itself doubles as a pitcher, you can easily give your guests coffee. It also stays hot without needing to be returned to a burner, which makes it very convenient for a brunch or lunch spread!

It Looks Great

Superficial, sure, but I love how a percolator looks. The sleek design of a coffee pot like this is more compact and stylish than most electric coffee makers. If you want a statement piece, a percolator is a great option.

And if you don’t want the percolator on the counter, that’s an option, too! Percolators can be unplugged and easily stored in a cupboard. The same cannot be said for most coffee makers, which are meant to stay on the counter all day, every day. And not everybody wants that in their kitchen!

How To Use A Percolator

The last thing I want to touch on today before diving into the reviews of the best percolator options for easy at-home coffee is how to use a percolator. You may already know how, but a refreshed is never a bad idea.
