Choosing The Right Red Copper Pan
Red copper pans rocketed into mainstream popularity when Cathy Mitchell first aired this convincing As Seen On TV infomercial:
Wasn’t that a super convincing commercial? As you can see, it’s an interesting pan that can really do a lot in the kitchen. If you want to revolutionize how you are cooking food, choosing this option may be a great idea.
These pans revolutionized many kitchens. Where else can you find a pan that is scratch-free, nonstick, and oh-so-appealing? For many people, they had never had a pan quite like a red copper pan.
Still, since this commercial aired there have been many different types of red copper pans come onto the market. To find the best pan, you will want to review all of the options based on the following features.
Copper Type & Thickness
One of the most important things to consider about all copper pans is the type of copper they are made of and what thickness it has been made in.
The most valuable type of copper fry pan will be made of copper or at least have a whole layer of copper on the outermost layer for quick, even heat transmission. This is what gives copper pans their best cooking abilities.
In the old days, 3.2mm (or ⅛ inch) was thought to be the optimum thickness for copper pans. Nowadays, it’s been shown that pans that are 2.5mm thickness are the best ones around. They heat up and cool evenly, leading to a better cooking experience. Plus, they don’t weigh as much!
It is best to look for a pan that has 2.5mm thickness and is made of real copper. If you are looking to save money, cookware that has at least a 2mm thickness will work for most chefs as well, but it will not offer the same heat retention or durability that 2.5mm thickness will provide.
Handle Type
Another important consideration to pay attention to is the type of handle on your new red copper pan. Three different types of handles are common for red copper pans:
- Cast iron
- Stainless steel
- Bronze
Each of these types of handle has different characteristics, so you should choose the type of handle that fits your needs best.
Cast iron pans are thought to be the best handles for red copper pans. This type of handle stays cool during cooking and does not react with the red copper. Additionally, they’ve very easy to grip making them a reliable choice.
Many copper pans that have less than a 2.5 mm thickness have a bronze or stainless steel handle instead of cast iron. In most cases, companies that are trying to save money will choose to use bronze handles on their red copper pans.
However, bronze handles get hot very fast, making them a poor choice. Stainless steel options are a good, affordable choice, but they can be difficult to get a good grip on. If you are choosing between the two, I recommend stainless steel handles over bronze handles.
Type Of Lining
You should also think about what type of lining each copper pan you are looking at has. Different linings are used by different pan manufacturers, and the lining affects what type of cooking experience you will have.
There are three types of lining that your copper pan may have:
- No lining
- Tin lining
- Stainless steel lining
Tin or stainless steel linings are the best choices for most people because this lining prevents the food from reacting with the copper.
Tin requires more care than stainless steel because it is a soft metal and will need cleaned and taken care of more carefully. It conducts heat as well as copper does, and tin is nonstick. While tin does wear out over time, you can re-tin pans if necessary.
Stainless steel linings, however, are more common than tin linings. This is because stainless steel is much more low maintenance than other linings, and most chefs prefer this. It is also very sturdy, making it an easy choice even if it is not nonstick. You can simply scrape away anything stuck on.
Among these options, I recommend using stainless steel lined copper pans. The outside of your copper pan will already need some polishing and care to look nice. If you choose a pan with stainless steel lining, you won’t need to worry about taking care of the inside as much as you would if you chose tin lining.
Using Your Red Copper Pan
When cooking with a red copper pan, it is important to make sure you start with low heat and limit yourself to cooking between low and medium heat. Because this type of pan heats up quickly and evenly, it can run hotter than other pans you own.
The best way to cook with it is to go slow and steady with the heat. You will not need as much heat as you do when cooking with less efficient pans, so keep that in mind.

1. Copper Chef 10" Round Pan with Glass Lid
The first review I’d like to share today is for the Copper Chef 10" Round Pan with Glass Lid. This pan has a stainless steel lining that is very durable and helps the pan heat up evenly, making it one of my favorites.
This pan from Copper Chef is one of the original. The outside is a copper blend that has an added stainless steel plate, and the inside is coated with a nonstick ceramic coating. This coating is incredibly scratch resistant, so you won’t see scratches even after weeks of use.
The key to using this and other copper pans is to cook them at a lower temperature with little or no oil! If you heat this pan up too much, everything will begin to stick because hot spots will form, so remember that while you are cooking with it.

2. Cooksmark Copper Pan 10-Inch Nonstick Induction
The next red copper pan worth checking out is the Cooksmark Copper Pan 10-Inch Nonstick Induction Compatible Frying Pan. I love this pan because it is specifically made to be able to work with induction stove tops, which are one of my current favorite appliances.
This pan has a stainless steel handle, which can be hard to grip, but it is dual-riveted. This makes for an easy gripping surface that won’t become a danger while you are cooking with it. The bottom induction plate is also made of durable, easy-to-clean stainless steel.
This pan is coated with a great, nonstick compound called Maxlon on the inside. It keeps foods from sticking to the pan for a very long time.

3. BulbHead Red Copper Infused Non-Stick Square Ceramic Pan Cookware Set
Next up on our list of the best copper pan is the BulbHead Red Copper Infused Non-Stick Square Ceramic 5 Piece 10-Inch Pan Cookware Set. What I love most about this pan is that it comes with a fantastic 5 piece set that will make it possible to fry, grill, bake, and more with one pan. And, it even includes a book teaching you how to do all of these things!
This square-shaped pan has very high sides, making it safe and easy to use. It is also oven safe to temperatures up to 500 degrees F.
The inside surface on this pan is made of a fusion of nonstick ceramic and copper, which means that you won’t find that your food gets stuck to any dangerous hot spots. This coating is nonstick and never scratch!

4. Copper Chef Square Fry Pan with Lid
Another pan from Copper Chef has made our list, and that is the Copper Chef Square Fry Pan with Lid, 9.5 inch. Copper Chef was the original face of making red copper pans mainstream popular, and they have done a great job of keeping up with making great pans that chefs around the world love to use.
This pan is heat resistant up to 850° Fahrenheit, making it great to use in the oven or while frying various foods that may get very hot. I love that it is a square pan, but the sides are not too high. Some square pans are difficult to use because the sides are too high, but that is not the case with this pan.

5. Gotham Steel Ceramic and Titanium Nonstick Fry Pan
The final pan in my red copper pan reviews today is the Gotham Steel Ceramic and Titanium Nonstick Fry Pan, Brown, 10.25". I really like this pan because it is very well balanced and very light weight. Some pans feel too heavy or too late depending on the handle, but this pan feels even in your hand.
This small pan is great because it will cook food very easy without sticking, and it doesn’t take much effort. You simply add what you want to cook and get to work! You don’t need any oil or cooking spray to get your food cooked.
This pan will need to be seasoned every few months to keep up its nonstick capabilities, but this is very simple to do with this type of high-quality pan.
