#1 Curry Fish Balls Are A Traditional Treat

Via asianinspirations.com.au

This treat has been served since the 1950s, and it can probably be considered one of Hong Kong’s most traditional treats.

When you order these fish balls, they’ll usually come in groups of five on a bamboo stick. Then, they’ll be rolled or coated in a curry sauce to give the fish some extra flavor! The chewy texture of the fish balls combined with the sauce is a great combination.

These can be easily found in any area of Hong Kong, they’re super easy to eat, and they’re cheap! If you’re looking for a snack on the go, look for curry fish balls.

#2 Stinky Tofu Is Great...Once You Get Past The Smell

Stinky tofu is exactly what it sounds like: tofu that stinks! This tofu is a famous as the king of street foods.

To get its smell, this tofu is soaked in some type of brine for a few hours, days, or even months. Seriously. The brine can be made of milk, vegetables, meat broths, or anything else that will give stinky tofu a unique flavor and smell.

After being soaked, the tofu is deep fried and served alongside a spicy sauce. When you bite through the crispy outside, the creamy center will delight your senses. Again: only if you can get past the smell!

#3 Cozy Up To Roasted Sweet Potato and Chestnuts

While enjoying roasted sweet potatoes and chestnuts is not a street food that is unique to Hong Kong, it’s still one worth trying. This combination of hearty, roasted flavors is a great pick me up while traveling this fun city, especially in winter!

The sweet smell is just as good as the taste, so I like to walk by these carts even if I’m not buying anything.

This food is served simply. Nothing is added; the potatoes and chestnuts are simply roasted, making this one of the healthiest street foods you can get in Hong Kong!

#4 Two Words: Egg Waffles

There are quite a few different egg based treats that Hong Kong is famous for, but nothing can beat the fame or delicious flavor of egg waffles. The first thing that will draw you in is the sweet flavor, and once you take a bite, you’ll keep coming back for more.

Vendors pour egg batter into a waffle griddle pan and make a bite sized waffle that is crispy on the outside and ooey-gooey on the inside. Popular versions of this street food include egg waffles with chocolate, sesame, or even green tea flavorings!

The egg batter used to make the waffles is made from a mixture of eggs, flour, sugar and evaporated milk. This combination makes it just sweet enough to give you an afternoon pick-me-up before going on with your day!

These waffles are getting popular in cities around the world, so if you can’t wait to try them, check your local street markets!

#5 Cheung Fun is Convenient On The Go

Chu cheung fun is a street food that is known both for its flavor and its portability. Served in a styrofoam cup as pictured above, you eat this dish with wooden skewers while you wander through Hong Kong’s streets.

Wondering what it’s made of? That’s simple. Chu cheung fun is made of steamed rice rolls and then covered in a delicious sweet sauce, peanut sauce and sesame seeds to give the relatively bland rice rolls some flavor!

What how it’s made here:

Not enough flavor for you? Make sure to dip your rolls in spicy sauce for a tastier bite!

#6 Another Eggy Treat: Egg Tarts

Egg waffles aren’t the only egg treat that makes for a popular Hong Kong street food.

Egg tarts are known around the world as a delicious treat, but they’re known in Hong Kong as the queen of street food. You can’t beat the taste of a freshly made egg tart; nothing tastes more like “Hong Kong” to me.

The outside is a golden, crispy pastry, while the inside is a delicious egg filling. You can’t choose one part as your favorite because both parts are so tasty. They are made from egg, milk, and sugar, and the best time to buy them is when they have just been put out for sale!

#7 Siu Mai: Dim Sum On The Streets

Dim sum is an incredibly popular dish, and sui mai is a type of dim sum that you can get on the streets while enjoying your time in Hong Kong.

While these aren’t as neat or as delicate as what you might find in a traditional restaurant, these delicious treats are served on a stick and can be eaten on the go. They are usually filled with a pork or fish filling, and you can dip them in a sauce before gobbling them up.

You can find these treats served in single portions on sticks or in groups of five for really, really cheap prices. So there’s no reason not to try every flavor you can find!

#8 Grab-and-Go With Noodles!

Another great treat that you can get when you’re in a rush is a batch of noodles in a bag!

This street food is exactly what it sounds like. You choose your noodles, sauce, toppings, and other add-ins. They’re all added to a bag of noodles, and you’re on your way!

While this treat doesn’t bring any new amazing flavors to the table, it does bring a fun brand of efficient, tasty food that you can get mixed to your taste when you are getting hungry. Give it a try, and see what unique combinations of snacks you can come up with!

#9 Pineapple Buns Are A Must-Try!

Everybody that has read about Hong Kong has heard of the famous pineapple buns, and these are a street food that you have to try. They’re great for any time of day, but I prefer to get them in the morning when the city is waking up.

What is a pineapple bun? Well, it’s a sweet white bun that has a sugary layer on top. The bun should be served with a slab of butter in the middle, and it just melts in your mouth.

Where’s the pineapple, you ask? There isn’t actually any pineapple in a pineapple bun. Seriously! The treat gets its name from how it the crinkly, top sugar layer makes the whole treat resemble a pineapple.

Sorry pineapple lovers, but this is still a treat worth trying!

#10 Get Tentacle Crazy In Hong Kong!

When you see tentacles roasting on the streets of Hong Kong, chances are you won’t be tempted to try it, especially if you’re not a seafood lover.

Trust me when I say that these treats - grilled, octopus or squid tentacles dipped in condiments of your choice - are so very delicious. Most street foods are very oily, but these are not. The tentacles have a chewy, delicious texture that you’ll wind up adoring as much as the locals do.

#11 Bowl Pudding Isn’t Really Pudding...Or A Bowl

Via spoonuniversity.com

This little treat is usually served on top of a wooden skewer, but it keeps the shape of the bowl it was cooked in. This is how it gets the name “bowl pudding.” It’s also known as chai ko.

The pudding is actually a gelatinous cake that has red bean filling in it. The cakes are steamed in a bowl, which is how they get their shape.

Traditionally you would eat these bowl pudding treats hot, but in the hot summer, you can also find them cooled for a refreshing bite.
